Get ready for summer travel, celebrity-style: Entertainment
Whether it's by car, train, boat, or plane, your first trip with your kids or your fifth, the preparation can be daunting. Unlike celebrities, most of us don't have an entourage of nannies and personal assistants to help us manage the process, or access to private jets, but we came up with some of our favorite travel tips to help you travel like a celebrity. So grab your huge sunglasses and check out our summer travel cheat sheet to minimize the stress.
Click Continue Reading for our tips on keeping your kids entertained on your flight or long car ride.
- Unlike most celebrities, you probably don't have a nanny so it's up to you to keep your kids amused and entertained. The key is to come prepared with new toys for them to investigate once you get on the plane or arrive at your destination. However, few of us can afford to buy all new toys just for a trip so take advantage of your young child's short-term memory. A few weeks before your trip, stash some of your child's favorite toys, books, etc. and bring them on your trip so that they seem new and may hold their attention longer.
- If you don't have an activity kit like those from Koo-Koo Kidz travel activity bags or Four Peas Backpacks, order one now! They contain enough activities for the entire trip and then some.
Other fun toys for the plane include a new coloring book and crayons, Color Wonder markers and paper, and an Aquadoodle Travel n Doodle (we got ours at Target for about $13).
- Whether or not you're a parent who believes in TV, portable DVD players are perfect for long flights and car trips. We've been using the Audiovox Kids 6.2" DVD Player ($99) for the last few months and it's eliminated a lot of demands for "uppy uppy!" One bonus of this model is that the buttons are on the top so younger children will be less likely to mess around with them. Bring a movie your child loves and maybe a new one. Don't forget child-sized headphones like these from iFrogz ($8), which will fit her smaller keppe better.
If you have a video iPod, kidproof it by putting it in an iFrogz Tadpole Wrapz ($20), which has handles for your child to hold and watch a movie. For an additional $5, you can get an optional protective sheet of transparent plastic that lays over the screen, protecting the iPod from scratching and wear and tear, further kid-proofing it.
- Music-wise, we're enjoying Lisa Loeb's newest album, Camp Lisa, which benefits her Camp Lisa Foundation, and Susie Tallman's Let's Go CD- Travel, Camp and Car songs (check out our review).
